Sungai Buloh nursery operators have rejected the design proposal for a revamp of the place saying it is unsuitable and unfair.
They are also unhappy that their main concern regarding the Temporary Occupation Licenses (TOL) was left unanswered during the briefing held by Yayasan Selangor Monday and plan to appeal to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim at a meeting Tuesday.
“We want to maintain the uniqueness of the area. What Yayasan showed us in the briefing is just not possible as there is not enough space,” saidLun Wan Tau, vice president of the Association of Landscape and Agricultural Nursery Operators Subang (ALNS).
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Landscaping and Nursery Operators Association president Lee Chee Hoong said Yayasan proposed design was something they, as landscape experts, could do themselves.
Most of the 50 nursery operators represented by the two associations attended the briefing held at Menara Yayasan Selangor in Petaling Jaya.
Many of the operators felt the proposed design was unsuitable because it would destroy the old world atmosphere of the place. “Grand plans are out of place here,” said one of the operators, Jolene Tan.
They also felt that the proposal was unfair as not all lots had the adjacent space for facilities.
Yayasan Selangor's long term plans also involve building an expo area to hold flower shows, a police kiosk as well as hiring 24-hours security and upgrading other infrastructure in the area such as lighting.
Nursery operator Thomas Varky said that some of these were unnecessary.
“Many have workers staying at the nurseries. So, we operators basically guard our own places. There has also been road upgrading in the area recently and the street lamps are as bright as day now during the night. So I do not see how these plans are relevant,” he said.
On the issue of TOL, Tan said the operators had spent “much money and time hiring surveyors and having so many meetings with all kinds of people from the Petaling Jaya City Hall to the land office in the expectation that we would obtain the TOL.”
“It is like giving us a dream and then taking it back abruptly,” she said.
While the operators have been trying to obtain the TOLs for the past three years, supported by area MP R. Sivarasa, Yayasan Selangor only presented their design proposal in November last year.
“We presented the design during a Selangor executive council meeting. We engaged an architect and surveyor to come up with the necessary details of the plan about a month before that,” said Yayasan Selangorgeneral manager Ilhan Marzuki at a press conference after the briefing.
He also said that the TOL Yayasan had received was dated June 3, adding that they had not decided on the rental of the area but hinted that it was likely to be based on the size of the lots and the facilities to be built in the area.
Sivarasa said that the matter of the TOL still remained unresolved.
“The TOL is a license and not a land grant. As such, it can be revoked at any time and this is up to the Mentri Besar,” he said, adding that there were also concerns about the lots being sub-let and the inability of the operators as individuals to improve the place overall the way a company could do.
“The area's potential as a tourist attraction for locals and foreigners can be realised by upgrading the place,” said Sivarasa.[The Star]
