GEORGE TOWN: A police raid on an apartment in Jelutong uncovered a football betting syndicate believed to have collected bets amounting to millions of ringgit.
Northeast district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the raid at 12.30am Sunday also led to the arrest of seven men and two women, including a Chinese national.
He said the nine suspects were busy taking bets online using three laptops and computers when a team from the anti-vice, gambling and secret societies division pounced on them.
"Initial investigation found that bets were made using chips bought online.
Each player was allowed to bet up to RM10,000, each time, meaning the syndicate could collect as much as RM1mil daily."
Gan said police seized three laptop computers, several chairs and a table designed like a mini casino.
They are tracing other syndicate members and investigating whether it is part of an international syndicate.
The suspects aged 30-48 years were remanded to assist in investigations under the Common Gaming Houses Act and the Betting Act 1953. - Bernama/The Star

Negeri Lim Guan Eng Pusat Sindiket Pertaruhan Haram
Masa media arus perdana sengaja menghebohkan untuk legalise pertaruhan bola sepak, bukan main reaksi para pembangkang. Mereka tuduh Najib luluskan lesen judi untuk dapatkan dana pilihanraya. Termasuklah, Lim Guan Eng turut menentang kelulusan lesen perjudian bolasepak.
Memang aku dah syak dari awal, mereka ni sengaja tak mahu kerajaan luluskan pertaruhan bolasepak bukan kerana judi itu haram. Sebaliknya, mereka ingin melindungi sindiket pertaruhan bolasepak haram.
